The orchestra, led by Nino Caicedo and Alexis Lozano and founded 40 years ago, maintains its old-school sound while fusing it with a contemporary feel. Their current hit, “Mala Costumbre,” is the most popular salsa song on Colombian radio this year.
Guayacán Orquesta has the most played salsa song so far in 2016 on Colombian radio, according to Decibeles, the Bogotá-based company that monitors music radio for Billboard in the country. The song, “Mala Costumbre,” reached No. 2 on the list of the 100 most popular songs on Colombian radio in February.
This week, the song written by Nino Caicedo and produced by Alexis Lozano, the longtime leaders of the orchestra, holds the seventh position in a battle to remain among the top ten favorites against Urban, Popular, Regional Mexican, and Pop hits. “Mala Costumbre” and “Como en el Idilio” by Marc Anthony and Nathy Peluso are the only Salsa songs in the Decibeles Top 10 this week, but Guayacán already holds the title with “Mala Costumbre” for having the most-played Tropical song on radio stations in Colombia.
Decibeles is the leading music monitoring company in Colombia, with coverage in the nation’s main cities, totaling more than 700 municipalities. The company processes more than 140 million songs in real time and simultaneously. They provide Billboard Colombia with radio airplay data for its national Hot 100 chart.
